A former Catholic priest from Kansas is in serious trouble. He’s accused of embezzling parish money to feed his gambling habit. Just placing a few bets would’ve only slightly damaged his reputation. But he went further, stealing funds and facing criminal charges.
Richard Storey, a Kansas priest, is charged with stealing about $160,000 from his parish over four years. He made multiple transfers from the parish’s bank account to his personal one. Investigators found he used the money for a luxurious lifestyle. He took cruise vacations and withdrew $24,000 to gamble on a cruise. He also traveled to New York and European cities without church business.
The local Catholic community is deeply affected. Archbishop Shawn McKnight said the accusations are “very serious.” He reminded people that Storey is innocent until proven guilty and asked the community to be patient. Meanwhile, Storey has pleaded not guilty.
Sadly, this isn’t the first case of someone stealing to gamble. A Minnesota woman stole over $1.2 million from her employer, and employees at Binion’s Gambling Hall and Hotel in Las Vegas face similar charges.
