Canada’s Bold Move: Banning Social Media for Under – 16s

Canada’s proposed Safe Social Media Act is a significant step. It aims to ban social media for under – 16s, with exceptions for platforms with “sufficient safeguards.” Ottawa revealed this on Wednesday. If passed, platforms must verify age and reduce kids’ exposure to harmful content.
The official release emphasizes protecting children from content like sexual exploitation and self – harm promotion. But the industry subtext is a growing concern over the platforms’ failure to self – regulate. Social media giants have faced scrutiny, with Meta’s Facebook accused of poor policing of accounts involved in child exploitation.
This policy also regulates AI chatbots and requires better reporting in crisis situations. A new digital safety regulator will enforce the rules. Internationally, many countries are taking similar steps. Australia banned under – 16s from major platforms late last year, and Brazil and Indonesia introduced restrictions in May.
The industry governance will change. Social media platforms need to adapt quickly. Those that can’t meet the requirements may lose a large user base. The government’s firm stance will likely lead to a more responsible digital environment for children.
